DI-CNG injector nozzle design influence on SI engine standard emissions and particulates at different injection timings

Compressed natural gas direct injection (DI-CNG) systems in spark ignition (SI) internal combustion engines have shown that it can give several benefits compared to CNG port fuel systems. However, the DI-CNG injector nozzle head design and jet formation may greatly influence engine exhaust emissions performance. Present experimental study investigated of 7 different designs spray-guided injectors on process, performance, standard emissions, particulate number (PN) when methane was injected at timings (SOI) pressures (18 bar 50 bar). The heads had two main patterns – with small multi holes/orifices larger crevices (swirl or umbrella spray pattern). Naturally aspirated SI tests were conducted part load (6 IMEP) wide-open throttle (WOT) 2000 rpm speed. results revealed difference between an early stage intake stroke (310–350 CAD bTDC) either high load. for late timing (130–190 bTDC), a large impact stability, particulates. Multi-hole showed improved CO2, CO, THC, total PN, slightly higher NOx crevices. For some nozzles, SOI could be retarded more than other pressure whilst still ensuring acceptable performance terms power output formation. Overall, 50-bar under WOT conditions achieved levels all types. Images acquired using optical endoscope technique high-speed video camera yellow flame present types low SOI. Increasing reduced duration, air/fuel mixing which resulted lower PN most heads.
